Sony is advancing the digital SLR category for mainstream photographers with today's introduction of the new a (alpha) DSLR-A200 camera.

The DSLR-A200 features upgrades influenced by the recently-introduced, enthusiast-class DSLR-A700 camera and replaces the former Sony DSLR-A100 model, which was Sony's first in the DSLR class.

The new DSLR-A200 is designed to be faster, lighter and easier to use. Upgraded features include a wider, 2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD screen for easy playback viewing; a more compact body and an easily-accessible mode dial; an easy-to-use function menu (camera function display); improved noise control for higher quality images; an auto focus speed 1.7x faster than the previous model; improved predictive control performance; quieter shutter sound; automatic pop-up flash; and a battery life indicator that displays the percentage of battery life remaining so you know exactly when to recharge.

As seen in all a (alpha) camera bodies, the DSLR-A200 camera incorporates Super SteadyShot image stabilization in the body to allow shooting at shutter speeds of 2.5 to 3.5 steps slower than otherwise possible - a benefit realized with every compatible lens attached to the camera. Compatible lenses encompass all Minolta Maxxum mount lenses, in addition to Sony a (alpha) lens lineup - including Carl Zeiss lenses.

High-Quality Images - With its 10.2-megapixel (effective) APS CCD image sensor, the DSLR-A200 camera continues to offer high-quality images by allowing more light to pass through to each pixel - increasing sensitivity, reducing noise, and providing greater detail. Clean, reduced-noise signals are sent from the image sensor to Sony's BIONZ processing engine, which processes data-rich picture information at high speeds and reduces picture noise in the RAW data stage before image JPEG conversion. The results are high-resolution, detailed images with rich tonal reproduction.

The DSLR-A200 model supports JPEG and RAW file format support. It has a slot for CompactFlash Type I/II media cards. An adaptor for Memory Stick Duo media cards is sold separately as an accessory.

Get The Photo Results You Want - In addition to Super SteadyShot image stabilization for virtually blur-free photos, the new model incorporates Sony's D-Range Optimizer (DRO). It helps you capture well-exposed images, especially when shooting high-contrast or backlit scenes that often lead to loss of highlight and shadow detail. Sony's DRO modifies the range from highlights to shadows, including gain and contrast, through its in-camera hardware processing to produce more natural, evenly exposed pictures. The camera's image analysis technology studies the captured image data and instantly determines the best exposure and color tonality for the image before JPEG compression.

The BIONZ image processing engine powers the camera up immediately and the eye-start autofocus starts the focusing system before you even press the shutter. The camera can shoot up to three continuous frames per second at 10.2-megapixels at the finest JPEG compression level.

As seen in previous a (alpha) models, the new model carries a static-free anti-dust coating on the CCD filter which is gently vibrated to dislodge any dust that might have collected each time the camera is powered off.

Additionally, the DSLR-A200 camera's supplied lithium ion battery offers up to 750 shots per full charge.

Bright and Easy Playback - The camera's smaller, more compact body along with its wider, 2.7-inch Clear Photo LCD screen and a new on-screen navigation interface make it easier to carry and to use. The vibrant, easy-to-view screen features 230K-pixel resolution, an anti-reflection coating and glare-reducing layer assures vivid, accurate colors with a wide viewing angle, even in daylight. The on-screen navigation display shows camera settings and key shooting information in large, easy-to-read text. The display's orientation automatically switches from landscape to portrait position when the camera is turned on its side.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

I have used this camera for outdoor and portrait photography and am really impressed with the features and image quality. The only draw back so far has been the display, which tends to get nose prints and smudges on it rather easily.

This is my first SLR camera. So far, it has been perfect for my purposes and takes great photos. The quality isn't great in low light, but also not horrible; using a tripod really helps. Overall, I am extremely happy with this camera as well as the sony help-line. I would definitely recommend this camera.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

The A-200 is capable of taking good pictures as long as you don't go over 400 ISO. Also this camera is LOUD when the shutter button is pressed, the external flash (not included in this package) sets off a very bad high pitch noise. If you have the money for this I would suggest to keep saving your money for a Nikon. If your around other photographers you'll hide the A-200 like you would hide a wart.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

I really like this D-SLR. It can be discribed as "entry level". The lens, 18-70mm Zoom Lens, that comes with it is pretty good. I'd reccommend adding an upgraded lens (70-300mm for example) if you want to take great shots from far away. Also The lens isn't exactly tough. I put a small crack on the front outter-rim by giving it a pretty good drop (oops). Beside all of that I'd reccommend it to anyone breaking into the DSLR scene and wants a starter DSLR.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

This is an awesome camera! As a first-timer in DSLRs, I found the controls very easy to understand and use. The user manual itself is very helpful; it explains most of the jargon from photography in layman's terms. The lens compatibility is also superb. It can use all of the Minolta AF lenses. Battery-life is great as well. [...]The Sony-made lenses are not built as well as the Minoltas. My recommendation: get a Sony Alpha body, and strap it on to a Konica-Minolta lens. You'll get the best results.Accessories I Recommend:Konica-Minolta AF Lenses

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

One of the main reasons I purchased the Sony is I had a Minolta Maxxum and all of the lenses I had with that camera work with the A200. Since I am a casual photographer I wanted to maximize what I had and when I looked at the Sony I also felt it was one of the best entry level DSLRs. Very happy with my choice and I found during Christmas that if there is decent light it takes great pictures without the flash.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

This camera was a great deal! I also got the 75-300 lens and it will zoom in with such clarity. I am so pleased with this camera. The only thing I had to get used to was not seeing the picture on the lcd screen until I took it. But this is my first digital SLR. The pictures have been great and VERY clear and the color is awesome. Nothing bad to say about it! I shopped around before deciding and Ritz had the best deal. I pretty much got the extra lens free compared to all other places I looked and just the camera was more expensive.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

Ive been doing studio photography for a few years. This camera reaches all my needs when using studio lighting and extra flash units.

There are many settings to chose from when changing how your subject looks in front of the backdrops. (ONE) There are settings to blur the backdrop to give a brilliant sharp focus on the human image and their great smiles (IN THIS CASE USE THE (S) SETTING, GO TO MENU AND CHOSE PORTRAIT MODE.

(TWO) There are settings for your lighting when using softbox or umbrella reflectors and all other flash-head or strobe lighting units.. Such as the (S) setting on the selector knob.. This will disable the built in flash and will enable the hotshoe for your snyc adaptor (BEST TO USE ISO 400 AND TURN YOUR MONO FLASH TO AT LEAST 80 WATTS. REMEMBER IN (S) MODE IT IS SHUTTER PRIORITY, THEREFOR YOU MUST CHOSE SHUTTER SPEED TO GET A BRIGHT EXPOSEURE AFTER CHOSING ISO AND WATTS FROM YOUR LIGHTING.

I dont shoot photos long distance, so I cant say much about the 70 mm lense, but from what I see the zoom for this A200 is amazing. Very quick focus for any shooting purpose, very quick start up and very quick shutter.

To all who are looking for a DSLR, I have been reviewing for months on This camera as wells as the Nikon D40 and canon XT, XS, XSI models. I can not speak bad about any them either. All of them have their good qualitys.

When I decided to finally go out to buy a new camera, I had a hard time chosing from the three of them. I took my chance with this one and I am happy. Maybe you can take your chance with this one too, maybe this one will reach all your needs as well as they did mine.

I HAVE POSTED PHOTOS OF MY RECENT WORK WITH THE A200. NOW YOU WILL SEE TRUE PROFESSIONALISM FROM THIS DSLR.

Not to knock Sony (((I have purchased 6 of their point and shoots over the past 9 years) and their Operating system is annoying, and exposure was always poor.))
This A200 Sony - is NOT like other Sony's cameras. This is a whole new camera, operating system and a quality point they normally do not actually get to. This is a camera they should build their HI END name on. Its a winner.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

I bought this camera right as it was coming out, therefore I paid more for it than one can buy it today, but I love it. I chose Sony b/c I didn't want the same camera as everyone else; Nikon or Canon.

I am still trying to figure out all of it's bells and whistles. I love the white balance. No more yellow pictures when shooting indoors.

The one thing I don't like about it is the autofocus area thing. It sometimes doesn't focus where I want it to, it will choose it's own area of focus and then my picture is blurry. This especially happens if I'm shooting a shot right after another. (It's probably me though.) I would highly recommend not using the in camera flash. It leaves shadows on your subject.

I'm a mom of two kids 2yrs. and under and this camera is great.

Just came back from the Reno Air Races. I wanted a DSLR camera that would compete with my Minolta film camera and not put me in debt. I FOUND IT! The high speed photos I took of screaming jets and prop planes are truly amazing. Using the 75x300 zoom the shots are truly magazine quality. The A200K’s ability to freeze motion is fantastic and the rapid fire capability is perfect! The high pixel count allowed me to blow up the photos with beautiful clarity and I have many 8x10’s framed on the wall. Highly recommend this camera for all users. You won’t be disappointed.

This is my first DSLR and I couldn't be happier with it. After a couple weeks I could already use the controls with my eyes closed (If I wanted). Image quality, build quality, and ergonomics are all excellent for this price point. As a bonus: the battery life is amazing, and you get an accurate percentage readout of the remaining charge.

Overall, great camera for a first-time DSLR user or anyone else looking for high-quality at a low price.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

This was a great first step up to the DSLR world from my Maxxum 7000 film camera. My Minolta 50mm F1.7 and 70-210 F3.5 supplemented the 18-70 kit lens perfectly.

Like computers, things are changing so fast in the DSLR world. The A200 is the perfect camera to get the job done while prices drop on cameras with more features and capability. A good example was the Alpha 100 cost $1K more just two years ago. Although not the same quality as the A100 the A200 has nearly equivalent capability with some improvements like self cleaning sensor and ISO 3200.

I take allot of photos with the flash. I'm always disapointed with camera mounted flash. The A200 supports a wireless flash unit. Not available on any camera in this price range. I purchased a Sigma EF-530 super and a Gary Fong diffuser. Photos look like studio lighting. Amazing.

I bought this camera as an upgrade from a point and shoot. I was not happy with the pictures I was taking. I looked at all of the entry level DSLRs and bought the Sony. We have a few Nikons in our family and I find the Sony much easier to use. I can make any changes I need to using the LCD screen and just a few buttons. Seems to work well in low light pictures. I am very glad I bought this camera.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

I'm new to DSLR camera and found a200 to suits my needs as photography's my new found hobby.

This camera's is easy to learn to use since the buttons, functions and menus are well-laid out.

It's feature is more of good enough for everyday shooting. Just add more accessories - lens, flash, etc - to it if you want to squeeze more juice from it. But the kit lens that came with it is good enough (better than what the competitions offers) for casual shooting. And don't forget to get a decent Compact Flash card since it doesn't come with it.

My only gripe about this camera is its built. The outside - "plasticky feeling". But what do you expect for a camera at this price. It can't be beat!

I wanted better control and a better lens than with a point-n-shoot, but also to keep that capability.

I bought the Sony A200 after using a Minolta A200. I wanted a DSLR but needed to be practical about the cost. This camera is great. I take it with me on mission trips and really have not had a really bad picture yet. (Of course there is user error). I use a 2G card and can take pictures for most of the day. They have great color, the shutter is fast and it is great that I can change the ISO from very slow speed to the very fast.

Took 300 pictures at Disneyworld and over 600 on Mediterranean cruise so far. Worked great. Suggest a monopod for night shots even with steady shot on, but if you can get it still the night shots are great.

Battery lasts forever...

My only complaints are the potential for scratches on the LCD and the lack of the adapter for my other Sony media storage devices (it came free on A100).

Also, the camera works well with existing Minolta lenses, so that was a huge plus for an "ex" Minolta 35mm SLR user.

When comparing to the Cannon and Nikon (both great cameras too), the primary feature that stands out with the Sony model is the 'Super Steady Shot' that is built into the body of the camera. With the other cameras you need to by special lenses(more expensive) to compensate for a shaky hand. So, if you choose to purchase additional lenses down the road, the Sony gives you a broader selection of lesser expensive options. Oh, did I mention for a 10.1 megapixel camera, this camera is [$] less expensive than the other guys? Food for thought. Highly recommend this product.

(ONE) There are settings to blur the backdrop to give a brilliant sharp focus on the human image and their great smiles. (TWO) There are settings for your lighting when using softbox or umbrella reflectors and all other flash-head or strobe lighting units.. Such as the (P) setting on the selector knob.. This will disable the built in flash and will enable the hotshoe for your snyc adaptor. I dont shoot photos long distance, so I cant say much about the 70 mm lense, but from what I see the zoom for this A200 is amazing. Very quick focus for any shooting purpose, very quick start up and very quick shutter. To all who are looking for a DSLR, I have been reviewing for months on This camera as wells as the Nikon D40 and cannon XT models. I can not speak bad about any them either. All of them have their good qualitys. When I decided to finally go out to buy a new camera, I had a hard time chosing from the three of them. I took my chance with this one and I am happy. Maybe you can take your chance with this one too, maybe this one will reach all your needs as well as they did mine

I figured my point and click wasn't going to do Yellowstone or the Grand Teton justice. The Sony 200 alpha however was worthly of the task. I'm a novice photographer so I don't know the industry vocabulary, all I know is I got great pictures. The camera was easy to learn and use...and I didn't even take the manual with me.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

As an art photographer, I have been shooting 35mm, 6x6 and 6x7 medium format. I wanted a camera to replace my stable 35mm work horses.Over the last 30 years I have used Canon, Pentax, Ricoh and Minolta with good results. After trying a friends A100, I waited to see if Sony was going to stick around and play a part in the DSLR market. After they introduced the A700 in the fall of 2007, and then this year the A200, A300 and A350. I thought I would give the A200 a try. This camera focused faster than my friends A100 and did better in low light. It also can be set to 3200 ISO in low light emergency shots. After digging out my old Minolta Maxxum lens, a 50mm 1.7, and a the old well known 70-210mm f4 beercan. I was pleased at the quality of my results. The camera is easy to use and changing the settings is simple. I later purchased a couple Sigma lens to try on it and came away very happy with the results as well. This is a very nice entry level DSLR and affordable lens can be found on eBay and in the stores like Ritz and Wolf. My only dislikes with this camera are; the fact that Sony has done away with the 2nd dial for manual users and replaced it with a shift key button on the back. The other thing is the kit lens feels very cheap. Though it did perform fairly well. What I really like about this camera is the way it feels in my hands, it is easy to use, super steady shot helps with my longer telephoto lens, and in low lighting, long battery life, very quick auto focus, nice setting for black and white work, good metering with DRO that reduces shadows that you would normally have to use photoshop to change and works well in low light settings. And the last thing I liked is the cost of [$] with the kit lens.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

Having been a long time Minolta owner, I was hesitant to try Sony. It is nice to see that they have kept the quality the Minolta line carried. This cam works great, and looks just as nice.

Great buy.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

I purchased this camera for a wedding. Having used mostly film slr cameras and some semi manual control digitals this camera was very easy to use. The battery percentage feature is excellent. The focus time is great. The automatic settings are fun.

The other thing I liked about this camera is that it came with a lens that has a little more zoom on it than the other kit lenses with other brands. This was a great move on sony's part because not everyone can afford to go buy a four or five hundred dollar lens when they've just purchased a camera.

I'll admit, I was skeptical about using digital in the first place. I was (and still sometimes do) shot black and white film with a really old minolta srt-101. I didn't buy sony because they took over minolta. This camera exceeded my expectations for a digital.

Bottom Line:
Great value and most importantly great pictures for the money. Sony has really done a great job on this one. So even though they are new comers to the DSLR market don't be afraid to purchase this one.

Very nice camera. Has ALL the bells and wistles of both the d40 and xti and some!!! In body image stabilization and a larger screen are both very atractive features at this price. Longer lens a plus and a 3200 iso setting that has limited noise.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

We purchased this camera as a to take better shots than our point and shoot cameras, specifically, our children's sporting events, their school functions, and also to take pictures of the birds at our bird feeders.

We are not professionals but I did own high end Minolta equipment and took some pictures that I have sold.

First, the good. The pictures were very stable (no shake) and very clear. The camera works extremely well in low light and the flash is very good. The controls are easy to understand and the advanced functions are intuitive.

In addition, the camera is light and would be easy to carry around.

Now, the bad. The basic lens included is not enough to get closer than 20 feet to the intended subject. The basic lens is great if you want group shots or want portraits or similar. If you are going to take sports shots or longer distance, immediately buy a zoom lens (we are buying the SAL75300 today).

I have included some pictures to show the quality. The first shows a Black Capped Chickadee from about 30 feet on full zoom. The next is the same picture zoomed and cropped by computer. As you can see, you need a larger zoom lens.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

I love this camera!
Controls are well layed-out and logical.
The Super Steady Stabilization is great!
Picture quality is as good or better then most in it's class.
I had (and returned) both the Nixon D40X and Canon Rebel XTi, both lacked stabilization and created poor quality action/sports shots. Sony corrected that, could be that I'm a terrible photographer but the results speak for themselves.

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

Hands down best digital SLR for the price. This was camera of the year in several top photography magazines. I was going to get the Canon, but after reading the reviews and doing my own research, I found this to be the best deal. I love the image stabilizer in the camera body instead of the lens. I recently needed a high power zoom lens for graduation and was thrilled that the price of the Sony lens was less than a third of the same Canon lens (because the stabilizer is in the camera, not the lens). You'll pay more in the end if you get another brand. Also, don't waste money on an extra battery unless you'll be away from electricity for more than a week. One charge lasts FOREVER!

SONY A-200, new model – new pleasures

Comments about Sony Sony A200K DSLR Camera Body w/18-70mm Zoom Lens:

Like the new way the controls have been changed.
Like the quicker, much faster AF… quieter action. [no more clunckety cluck when you depress the shutter release … especially when doing multi-shot action.
Like the lighter weight.
Like the new "preview / review" options that have been added.
Like the new "digital" menu's rather than the A-100's 2 dial driven system.
Like the pop-up flash option.
Like the digital display [menu etc], it just feels more like it is now "at home" with the orange, rather than the "outta nowhere blue" that was on the A-100's menu.
Like the bigger, better, crisper screen.

Don't like that the "base" / "budget" model does not have live, view.
Is that not just a software thing? or are there hardware components that are largely expensive – for this extra nifty function. It's not always appropriate to have your sweaty, dirty chops up close to the back.

Don't like the fact that the "Delete" pic default option – now is always "cancel" … The A-100, allowed the "delete" option as user defined preference … To date I've not found it in the menu.

Don't like the fact that the battery has been changed …
I bought two extra battery packs for the older model, and now they are not able to fit in to the newer model. I had assumed that when the camera is upgraded, all the "bits" would move to the upgraded back. NOT SO!! – Clever marketing move, SONY.
F.Y.I. – even though the battery has been changed, the charger is still the same?? Go figure … then why make us buy new batteries, again??

Don't like the feel of the exterior housing & the grip. It now feels "cheap & nasty" and all "plastic" compared to the A-100's robust feel.

Another clever marketing move by SONY was now to not include into the bundle, the Pro Duo II >> CF Converter, or the Flash hot shoe cover, as in the A-100 dbl lens kit that I bought previously … So if you plan on selling your older unit, before getting your paws onto an A-200, remember to retain those items, if you make use of them.

Also I didn't like the quality, feel, and finish of the newer strap now supplied in the DSLR A-200W kit. In fact I didn't like it so much that I kept the older one, and gave the buyer of my A-100 the "newer" strap.

And Lastly:
Absolutely hate the fact that I can almost never open the door to get the battery out … to charge the unit. The door's release knob, is almost non-existent, and literally ever time I need to get the battery out, I need to employ the use of a screw driver, to assist me in getting the door open, and I do not really have "fat" fingers.
Let's put this way, I never needed this extra "tool" in my bag of tricks.
Now it is an indispensable extra.

Over all …
I think that this newer model will stand out, as – as good as it's predecessor did, and will be a force to be reckoned with, in it's class.

I've been told that the A-700 is in a whole new league …
I can only say, when I get there I'm sure that one [or it's replacement] will be a good contender as my favorite of the lot. Budget restraints were the only reason for my upgrading only to the A-200 & not the A-700.
