Think of events that you take pictures of... now how many times in your life do they occur? Now, do you want to trust those moments to a cheap point and shoot or a quality camera? I decided if it was important enough for me to take a pic, might as well take a good one!

I must admit, I am a first time D-SLR user. I got tired of seeing pictures from friends of mine with D-SLR's that were stunning (and they knew nothing of photography) while my more common digital cameras just lacked the quality I saw in theirs. My P&S's were not basic either, I was using highly rated $300 cameras for that and they still just did not seem the same. Once Ritz came out with this package of the D40, two lenses, bag, etc... it was a done deal. That is why I never looked back... and I never use a point and shoot anymore! In addition... this camera is an "old model" and practically a dinosaur in today's electronics age. It rolled out THREE years ago and the fact that it is still competive and being used says volumes for the style, performance, and value it continues to bring.

GREAT THINGS
- Image quality
- Very minor shutter lag (great for catching those "blow out the candles" moments...) No more snapping the photo only to have the camera take the picture a second later, costing you the shot.
- Feel of the camera... it just fits your hands well.
- Menu system and help menu... great features to help first time SLR users adjust to the features.
- Package deal (videos help a lot with features)... plus Ritz had available for sale a specific D40 video that really opened my eyes to the capabilities of this.
- Inexpensive UV filter protects lens elements meaning less chance of damage to actual lens.
- Battery life is amazing, and if left on, auto shuts off so you do not return to find a dead battery just when you need to snap a photo!

Things that I are not so great...
- I love having the 18mm to 200mm that two lenses provide... I hate having to change them! Perhaps this is the reason the 18-200mm lens costs the same as this whole D40 package?
- Lens cap tethers would really be nice.
- Remembering to switch lens to "M" before manual focusing is important and can be a pain.
- Size... no matter how small this is, it is still not the size of a pocket camera.
- Will spoil you from ever wanting to use a pocket camera again.
- Get ready to look like a tourist... you need to not only carry the camera, but the extra lens as well! But one thing you will notice... as the price of these has dropped, there are many more DSLR users out there...

All in all, I have never regretted this purchase and it has turned me into an amateur photographer! Again, if the situation calls for taking a photo, why not take it with the best you can afford to use... and with these prices, no DSLR is out of budget anymore!

Bought this for general photo use. The wife hated using the camera we had before, because it took forever to zoom in and focus. With this camera it is hard to get her to put it away. The first day she had it we went to the kids triathlon and she shoot over 500 pictures with it. Most just goofing around and testing it, but she couldn't get over the easy of using it! I would highly recommend buying the extra 55-200mm lens for this camera for that extra distant shoot you will need. We used the 55-200mm lens the whole day at the triathlon.

[...]It was a pleasure to learn a newer camera with the simplicity this camera brings. The power consumption is minimal with me being to be able to take 100+ pictures and not have to recharge. This camera writes to memory very fast, unlike my previous SLR that I ended up waiting for it to catch up sometimes. Low light focus is great, focus speed is FAST. I use to USB to download and those speeds are great as well. It's very hot here in Texas and the heat isn't a factor when using this camera, it is with some others.

after using compact cameras for 5 years I started considering digital SLRs. People in the industry would always mention the D40 as a great way to start. Its a small, versatile camera that can go from point-and-shoot to the most elaborate combinations resulting in artistic creations.
The only thing this camera could use is exposure auto-bracketing, which is used to create HDR images. It allows, however, to adjust exposure manually.

I love to take pics of my small children. I didn't want to buy a real expensive camera yet because I'm chasing kids around and scared of damaging it. So far it has performed great. I would definitely recommend the sb400 flash to go with it. It makes a world of different for indoor shots.(used in photos below)
I really want to take pics with bokeh. The bad thing is the 50mm lens(which is the best for bokeh) will not auto-focus on this camera. I guess I should learn to manual focus!!

I have had the D40 for about 1 1/2 years now and I simply love it. My best friend loved it when she tried it and couldn't resist getting one. The quality of the photos is incredible and it's so easy to use. I have been told now several times that I need to sell my photography work. I love photography and this camera makes a great step when you are ready to advance your photography. Basically I can't say enough about it to fit on the page but I highly recommend it. Because of the D40 I have advanced in my photography capabilities and just bought the D5000.

I will use this product when ever I want to capture pictures for any reason. It is easy to use, and was a great value for the money. The camera bag witht he kit will dump it's contents on the ground when picked up by it's carrying strap if the catch is not fastened, so be careful there.

I take family photos. Scrap booking is more fun with this camera because it takes such great shots. I love having the zoom lens. We couldn't live with out that! Having it makes the diffence in candid, natural shot you don't have to be sooo close just to get the shot! Love it!

Friends have commented on how great my pictures look now that I'm using a good camera! I can definitely tell a huge difference. And now these pictures are frame-worthy whereas my old camera's pictures really weren't. It takes GREAT pictures of children moving and fidgeting and captures it perfectly. No blurriness. The only thing I would want is the ability to take short videos with it, but then the newer versions of this camera do that. WONDERFUL camera! WONDERFUL pictures!

I used to get so frustrated with my old digital camera. My 2 year old would be doing something cute and by the time I got the camera switched on, warmed up and clicked the button the moment had passed.

With the Nikon D40 you will get a great shot every time. There's no delay between shots, you dont have to wait for the flash to power up again, it's ready when you want it to be!

I used it at my daughter's soccer games and was thrilled with the action shots.

I was also very pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to figure out how to take a photo, right out of the box and without having to study the whole manual.

I use this camera mainly to capture my kids in their many sporting events. This camera helps me take a great picture each and every time. It's a little bulky compared to my little digital camera, but the end product is well worth it.

I use this kit for travel and fun. I have made some fantastic shoots with both lenses. The shutter release is so smooth. The detail of the shoots are fantastic and with some zooming in and out after the pictures are downloaded you will be amazed at you will see and find. I have some fantastic shoots of a coast guard search and recovery of a victim that I really didn't know I had in such detail at the time. The only problem I have had is getting the self timer to work when I needed it. But it won't be long and I will have that down to where I want it. Over all you can't go wrong with this kit.

Great camera - very user friendly. The lens is easy to change quickly for those "don't want to miss" moments - especially sporting events. My first week, I took 722 photos on 1 charge, and I only used 1/2 of my battery power. I do tend to turn it off or shut the flash if I am not using it continuously, but I was amazed that I could have gone on and on.
All the on-screen information and tutorials are great if you don't have the book right in front of you. Definitly a must have - especially if you have kids or grandkids to capture those special memories!

I love this camera. Due to the economic crisis, I was holding off on entering the SLR market, but after trying a friend's D40 I knew I had to make a sacrifice and get one. The only regret I have is not getting one sooner! Another friend recenlty purchased the D90,which I was fortunate to shoot. It's even more amazing. For an entry level into the Nikon arena, I'd highly recommend this camera for all.

I am not one to spend alot of money on myself. This is the first "real" camera I have ever purchased and I can't say enough about how easy it is to use and what wonderful pictures it takes! I bought the Nikon D40 kit and it came with the camera, two lenses, bag, videos all cords etc. The only additional thing you need to purchase is a good SD card and you are on your way to taking sharp, clear memories that will last a lifetime! Wanted to upgrade my digital camera that took OK pictures at best. Thought I would step up to the SLRs. Wow! Was I amazed at how great these pictures turn out. My first use has been taking pictures of my son's varsity baseball games. I can not believe how great the pictures turn-out. The first game I have a picture of a batter hitting a ball. The ball is as clear as can be in the picture. The second game I have a picture of a kid running to first and I see little specks of sand being kicked up from his shoes.

I did watch both videos. I haven't even tried to manually take pictures. Everything I have done is through the automatic settings. Even though a digital SLR is a little bit more than those small digital cameras the quality of pictures is above and beyond the difference in price. I will absolutely recommend to all to make the change. What is great about the Nikon D40 package is that you get an all in one deal at a great price. Though this is coined a starter model...I feel like a professional and I really am not sure why I would ever need a more expensive model.

This is an amazing camera. Small size makes it easy to carry around anywhere. Sure, it needs AF-S lenses, but I'm okay with that. I either have the kit lens on for every day shooting, or the 70-200 f/2.8 for sports. Simply amazing with either lens. Highly recommend this camera.

The only problem I have found is shooting kids baseketball indoors because of low light and action. Will need to purchase a lens for this that is f1.4 or f1.8. Not a fault of the camera, just a limitiation of what I have. Currently use camera on Aperature preferred and ISO 1600.

I've been shooting with an SLR since 1975 and finally made the digital jump. The D40, dollar for dollar, is one outstanding camera for my uses. It is light and comfortable in my hands. Camera body and 55-200 lens weigh significantly less than the old 85-205 lens I used on my 35mm SLR.

I am very happy with the purchase and the quality of the images that I am able to produce. The versatility of this camera makes it a real pleasure to use.

Been shooting with SLR's since the 1980's and the D40 is the first DSLR I've owned. I love it. It's light and it shoots great photos.

I tend to shoot in a lot of low light situations and the kit lenses aren't up to par for that purpose. But, since I've begun to shoot in RAW mode I can tweak a bad photo up to par where it would've been more difficult to impossible with a jpeg image.

I have recommended this camera to others and 4 (four) of my co-workers have taken me up on my recommendation. I'm not joking, either. Four of them!

We have always liked photography, and wanted to be able to take our pictures to the next level. This camera has suited all our wants perfectly. It is not so large it's awkward to carry around just about everywhere we go. The only slight annoyance is that it re-uses photo numbers when the card has been whiped clean as opposted to every picture taken with the camera having a unique identifyer; this can make it difficult when storing on the computer.

This is a great starter kit to get into digital photography. I have been a film hold out for a long time and this is a good way to get into digital SLRs and then use the D40 in the future for a backup to the D3, etc. Nice set of zoom lenses to go with it and the throw in bag and videos were a great addtion.

So far I really like my camera... I sat down and read some of the directions but not as much as I should. When we had our first child my wife and I were looking for a camera that would allow us to capture those once in a lifetime moments and a regular point and shoot just wasn't cutting it. We needed a camera that could take pictures fast, because if you've ever tried taking pictures of kids you know that you only get one chance most of the time. My wife likes the D40 vs the D80 because it is lighter and easier to handle and she is never going to use it for much more than taking pictures of the kids. Normally I would have jumped right in and bought the D80 but the D40 is more than enough camera for me and I probably wont need to upgrade until I either break it, lose it, or the D80 comes down in price so much I could by it with my lunch money :)

The D40 is limited to AF-S lens if you only want to use auto focus but you can use some AF lenses if you don't mind manual focus. We bought the the D40 package with the 18-55 and 55-200 lens and we have everything we'll ever need.

I have been wanting this camera for a super long time... even after the Nikon D60 came out. The D40 is perfect for me, who just wants to take nice pictures of my family and friends. I have had a collage degree in photography since 1980. This is my 4th digital camera. First one I absolutely love! Fast - Accurate & Razor SHARP! The most important thing in photography is a sharp lens. I had a Sony with a great name brand lens that suffered from chromatic abrasion! Nikon D40 is fantastic! You won't find a better deal anywhere!
Unless your making highway billboard signs you will be happy with 6mps.

My Mom and I share the camera and so far her only word to describe it is "Sweet!" She and I have both taken a couple hundred pics with it in the last week and are very happy.

My Mom took some pics of some birds at the beach and the sunset down here in Naples and they came out great.

I brought the camera on a recent trip to our camp in the Everglades and was pleased with how easy the camera is to use. I was able to get some great shots of the Fall Florida Fauna, and some snakes that stumbled into my path.

We would recommend this camera for anyone who is thinking of getting into the Digital SLR world. I'm glad we finally have.

Just got it and I'm thrilled. A couple of negatives. The LCD in the rear is exposed. If you leave it hanging on your neck, because of the way the strap mounts are placed on the camera, it hangs in the "shoot position" (lens pointing forward). In my opinion, it should be pointing down so the LCD is horizontal and not likely to get scratched by something you're wearing (buttons, etc.). As it is, the LCD could get scratched by hitting a belt buckle or shirt/coat button.

The other thing that's annoying is the "info" screen that pops up when you first turn on the camera and appears (seemingly) after every shot. You have to wait several seconds for the screen to go away so you can focus through the eyepiece without the distraction of the light coming from the LCD. That SHOULD be an option you can turn on or off as needed and not always on. Other than that, I can't say enough good things about the photo quality along with all the options. With an 8gb mem. stick, you can get over 2200 pictures (fine quality no less) at a time and over 700 photos per battery charge. That's pretty impressive. I really love it and am really looking forward to getting the Tamron Macro lens I ordered for it. I'd recommend it without hesitation.

I use this product to capture and re-tell a story or emotions of an event, place, people. I love to use the 200mm lens at concerts and events from near and very very far. The camera is great for the average photographer that wants great pictures. Especially great if you have kids that don't stay still for too long. There was only one problem I have found. The camera "locked up" while I was doing a photo shoot because I was taking LOTS of pictures, very quickly.

This was a gift for my wife and she absolutely loves it. My sister in-law bought one this past summer and she told us how pleased she was. The only down side is not able to take a pic using the LCD screen, you have to use the eye piece. The second downside is that wife won't let me take it hunting! This camera just is simply incredible , Mine was a upgrade from a Minolta Dimage A2 and I feel like iv been living under a rock , seriously . I wish I purchased a D50 or another Nikon instead of my Dimage a2 . The camera is soo easy its just incredible when you see the results . The menu and options are easy to use . I am so excited about how great the pictures are turning out. We have only had it for a week but it has been relatively simple to use. One of the favorites so far is my cat in the window and it captured the snow falling outside. Have also been able to get some awesome action pictures of the different birds at the feeders.

We have a 14 month old daughter and we wanted a camera that could keep up with her along the way... This camera does that and then some... Everything is great. We are able to capture some of the best moments with this camera and I'll have to say if you like to take pictures invest in a greater GB SD memory card. In just a few minutes we shot amazing pictures which were around 100 or so that we could not even image doing with our old camera... Great flash, fast focusing, the ability to correct some red eye errors, easy to navigate thru menus... I could go on about this one... I highly recommend this camera to anyone looking at purchasing. I bought this just in time. My son graduated Navy boot camp and I didn't want to risk bad photos with a small point-and-click. I needed a good quality camera, with a good zoom lens, without breaking the bank and without needing a large backpack to carry it. This was perfect. The quality of the camera is very good. Takes pictures at a rate of around 2.5 per second and it's very stable. I could zoom in and take great photos of one sailor in a ceremony of over a thousand -and it was indoors. I was really happy with the results. This Camera is great. It's easy to work with in auto-mode or you can work with shutter speed and aperture settings when needed. The battery lasted all weekend. I bought two backup batteries, worried that the battery would die quickly, but ended up not even needing them. The extra batteries come in handy though. You can keep one charged. I truly have not found anything that I do not like about this camera.

I have used the Nikon D70s, D80 and the D40 - while I prefer the D80 for the megapixels for enlargement, I have found that the D40 takes quality photos as well and now use both. It's not as quick on the shutter speed to catch sports inside, but with the right lens you can get great pictures outside, even at night. I would recommend this camera completely for the casual photographer. With the bonus lens package, this camera is a must buy for anyone in the market.

I just love this camera. I bought it because I couldn't stand the delay with my point and shoot small one. Maybe I wasn't using it correctly but then everyone I spoke to had the same problem. My granddaughter is now 2 1/2 and I'm so sorry I didn't buy it sooner. Shots are taken instantly and thats worth the price for me.

I've only had this camera for about 2 weeks, and right out the box it was great. This kit with a D40 body and two lenses is a great inexpensive introductory digital photography kit from a well-known world-class manufacturer. This is a good set to start into digital SLR photography. For the point and shoot digital photographer, the number of options and modes is a bit much. Take some time to learn these things and your photos will be great. Out of the box, in auto mode, this works great for the average photographer and is a great kit to learn with.

The D40 is our first DSLR. We've upgraded from our five year old point-and-shoot Kodak EasyShare. We know barely anything about photography, but we are really loving our camera. We have taken nearly 500 pictures in the month that we have owned it. Right now we mostly take pictures on the auto setting, but we are slowly gleaning more knowledge from the helpful DVDs and mostly from the instruction manual. We love the quality of the pictures and the speed of the response. We got sick of missing smiles for our one-and-a-half year old son and we just had twin daughters. Now we have the capability to captures those smiles instantaneously! If you're beginners like us, this camera is basic enough to take great pictures on Auto, but then has all the settings for you to really learn something about photography.We love the gadget bag--it fits the camera and both lenses with room to spare. The attachable carrying handle is sort of awkward, so we just stick with the shoulder strap.We'd like to get a 50 mm f/1.8 lens for the camera, but we've read that the lens isn't fully compatible with the D40--it only works manually and the auto settings don't work. That's one potential drawback.In all, this camera is light years ahead of point-and-shoot. I'm sure in the DSLR world it would be considered a "starter" camera. That's good enough for us. We sure liked the "starter" price for the kit--[$][...][...]we've been completely happy since.All of the pictures below were taken just on the Auto settings. No more missed smiles!

I will say that when I bought it said that the 55-200 mm lens that came with it was a VR, I even asked the person in the phone about it and she said yes, but when it arrived it was not a VR, I called to complain but they told me to return it if I did not want it. The only reason I bought from Ritz was because of the VR lens! Anyway the camera is great, Ritz camera is not so good and I was pretty disappointed with their customer service….

I thoroughly researched the D40, D40x, and D60 and after initially getting the D60 package deal with the 2 VR lenses, bag, etc [$]I returned it and bought the comparable D40 package at [...]Given this is just my first SLR (and I'm only using it for family pictures), I couldn't justify such a large purchase. Plus the only difference between the D60/D40x and the D40 is the megapixels. So, the $380 difference wasn't worth it to me.As for the camera, it blows away any of my countless point & shoot cameras. My only regret is that I should have bought one years ago. In a week I have more than 1000 pictures taken and can't wait to put together photo books online.So take the plunge. You won't regret it. Great for everyone. It has the standard settings for people just getting started, and takes excellent pictures. Also great for the "expert", you can change all of the settings in manual mode to create the pictures you desire. Built in flash works great, and goes a long way. The only problem is the image stabilization. If you tend to have shaky hands, your pictures could be blurred.

After looking at the family of Nikon digital SLR cameras, buying the D40 was an excellent decision. Unless you want to create poster-size prints, this 6 megapixel camera does everything that the D60 and D70 does without the additional price tag. Plus, I like the light-weight body of the D40...especially after having used the heavier Canon Rebel. All in all, the Nikon D40 is easy to use, fun to play with and the two lenses, the 18-55 and the 55-200 zoom lenses, which came with my package offer great viewing choices for the most part. I am trying to convince myself that I need another zoom lens, but for the type of photography I normally do, these two lenses really meet most of my needs.

Photo quality has taken a giant leap from the point-and-shoot I was using. So far I've used it to take portraits at a college reunion, and for shooting the grandkids. Haven't gotten out of the automatic mode, because it's so easy. I hope to get more creative as I learn the camera. The 55-200 zoom is great to catch candid portraits, and the battery charge seems to last fairly long. I haven't found anything to complain about, other than that relatives want to borrow it all the time.

I used 18-55 lens most of the time, The 55-200 lens was verymuch useful in taking snaps of Birds, Bunnies, Sports from outside the ground and candid shots of children

The only thing i would want in this is, additional focal points (there are only 3 points in D40, I heard that D60 has around 11 points), that is the only thing i wish to have

I am still learning all the features available and the DVDs that came with my purchase are helpful. Because it is larger than my pocket sized camera it did take some getting used to, but the quality is worth it.

This is a bargain - and a wonderful outfit. I have another review for the camera and normal zoom- the addition of the longer, tele-zoom really adds to the value. Like the standard lens. it is also very sharp. It is not stabilized, but I have found the camera ISO speed (one extra stop over others) to compensate for the absence of image stabilization (which extends the lens utility by 1-stop). And this lens is smaller and lighter than the equivalent IS lens!!

I Primarily use this camera at Dog Training & at competitions. I've been able to capture some incredible action shots during bite work. I've also used the camera to take pictures for a friend's wedding and they loved them.
The camera is very easy to use and figure out, without reading the manual. I really haven't come across anything that I don't like about the camera.

I really enjoyed this camera the moment I took it out of the box. What they say is true---great pictures with high quality right out of the box even if you aren't one to stray from Auto setting. But having the flexibility to tweak settings and enjoy sharper, crisper images than your point and shoot---you won't be disappointed!

Bought camera to do outdoor travel photography. Slightly heavy to tote around. Photo quality good. Response time not lightning quick. Drains battery power somewhat quickly. Good value for the price and for the beginner. Would recommend this product.

Originally considered the D80 but for the money this camera delivers. Very Lightweight, easy to use and produces excellent results. Only major drawback is no built-in focus motor so AF mount lenses won't autofocus. Yet, the two kit AF_S lenses are quite sharp and focusing is pretty fast. Plus, the small size of the D40 means you can take it anyplace.

I have had several occassions during shooting with the camera in the vertical position where the camera fails to function and it is displayed that the lens is not attached. I am going to contact Nikon and make a warranty claim. Other than that I have taken about 4-5,000 shots since early this year and I love it.
